The solderless connector setup includes a circuit board loaded with all the favourite USA grade electronics (Switchcraft jack, Switchcraft switch, CTS potentiometers, Orange drop capacitor). This circuit board simply drops into your Gibson style control layout, then you plug in the connectors we've added to the end of the pickup leads into the circuit board. The humbucker setup comes with default 500k potentiometers, 3 way toggle switch and 0.022uf capacitors.
These are available in both import (long shaft pots, short frame switch), USA (long shaft pots, long frame switch), or right angle (short shaft pots, right angle toggle switch) formats. (ONLY) Gibson Les Pauls will use USA. Epiphones and other import models will use the import format. SGs and similar will use the right angle format. Import models Les Pauls typically use short shaft potentiometers, but we've found through experimentation that due to the nature of the way that the pots are seated at different heights in the cavity, short shaft pots will not work effectively. Long shaft pots are used by shimming the shaft to the correct length with the second nut inside the cavity.
No soldering is required at all, making the installation job take about 10 minutes in total!
This pickup set was designed from customer demand!
Having seen the number of requests and the outstanding feedback from this pickup set, it seems silly not to make it an official set.
We've had many customers asking for a vintage styled P90 set that could be found all over the 1950s-1970s. It had to be clean, articulate, mellow and have just enough output to kick a valve amp into beautiful overdrive with natural bloom when pushed.
Starting from the Murky Horizon neck pickup, which was already in the ballpark of what was to be achieved here. Clean and low gain work are typically the primary uses for this set, the Murky Horizon neck can be a little bit 'spiky' at either end of the EQ spectrum. This is great for clarity, but when you're playing clean and want a singing sustain reminiscent of the golden days, it's just not right. The Murky Horizon neck was loaded with alnico 2 magnets to smooth off the rough edges.
The Murky Horizon bridge is miles away from what this pickup set was made to recreate, so that design was tossed to one side. A new bridge build was in order. A vintage wind was created, a touch hotter than the neck to balance, but no more than was necessary to retain all the vintage goodness. This curbed a little bit of the shrill highs of the vintage wind, and provided the singing sustain to match the neck, alnico 2 magnets were used once more.
