Why is it so important to keep your instrument in good shape? 

A poorly set up instrument can make it more difficult to play. A high action (string height) can make fretting the notes more difficult. Poor intonation can mean that your notes are off pitch even if the string is tuned correctly. If you want to learn just how pleasurable your playing experience could be, then having a set up to ensure it's playing it's best is vital.
